MADURAI: A Madurai-based farmer has managed to produce the highest yield in paddy by combining organic and chemical fertilisers, even as agriculture is undergoing the odds due to erratic rains.

C Sethumathavan from Chinnaelanthaikulam produced the yield of 24 tonnes per hectare paddy in the 2013 - 14 kuruvai season. Hailing from a traditional agriculture family, Sethumathavan had cultivated paddy on his 10 acres farm. But he was attracted towards achieving high yield in agriculture and attended the training on system of rice intensification (SRI) conducted by the agriculture officials. With minimum water available due to drought-like conditions, he opted for a long-term paddy variety and chose CR 1009.

The test harvesting carried out in 50 cents as sample produced 24 tonnes of paddy per hectare which is the highest for the last kuruvai season, officials said. In 2010 - 11 another farmer, Solamalai from the district achieved the highest yield of 25 tonnes per hectare and bagged a national award for his achievement. The officials in Madurai who submitted the results to the state government are now expecting that Sethumathavan will win. On Thursday, he was felicitated for his efforts by the joint director of agriculture, Jayasingh Gnanadurai.

Sethumathavan said that he has followed couple of methods to achieve high yields and one among them was using organic and inorganic fertilisers systematically. He used goat dung and green manure in the field before cultivating the land and used chemical fertilisers like DAP, urea, potash and zinc sulphate later. He transplanted 14 days seedlings and carried out weeding on the 10, 20 and 30{+t}{+h} days using cono weeder machine. Using effective water management and pesticide spraying, he could achieve the highest yields, he said.

He urged his counterparts to combine organic and inorganic fertilisers in cultivation and transplant 14 days' old seedlings for better yields. The gap of 25 X 25 centimetres between each seedling enabled good ventilation and eradicated rat menace in the field too, he said. Agriculture officer, T R Sridhar said that the use of organic and inorganic fertilisers helped the farmer since the former will enrich the soil and the latter would give the necessary thrust for the yield. "It was a good and efficient method adopted by the farmer since organic or inorganic when used separately would have not produced such yield," he commented. Besides, the paddy variety CR 1009 weighs more when compared to other varieties thus Sethumathavan could gain more tonnage, explained Gnanadurai.
