13 farmers have ended life till date in 2016 owing to crop failure due to spurious seeds

Andhra Pradesh: Farmer suicides mount in Adilabad, the opposition Congress has accused Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao of doing a Nero. “Ignoring the severe crisis gripping the farm sector is like Nero fiddling while Rome was burning,” observed District Congress Committee working president Naresh Jadhav, trying to drive home the point.

“The enthusiasm shown in organising cultural and religious events like jataras is missing when it comes to providing succour to families of farmers who committed suicide. This makes even the noble task of promoting our culture look improper,” the Congress leader tried to substantiate his allegation by drawing a parallel. So far in 2016, a dozen farmers have ended their lives owing to a plethora of reasons which contributed to the debilitating indebtedness. “There is no control on supply of spurious seed in the market or no effort to create awareness among us on the various diseases hitting standing crops,” points out Sher Raju, a farmer from the rich Munipalli village in Laxmanchanda mandal where a distressed farmer, Dhoda Ganga Reddy, ended his life on February 10.

“In Laxmanchanda mandal headquarter village, over 1,000 tube wells sunk during the last 6 months did not yield water. At the rate of Rs.15,000 for rigging a 200-ft deep bore well, the wasteful expenditure amounted to Rs.1.5 crore,” stated Kondapur Narsa Reddy, a paddy farmer, as he tried to demonstrate that lack of guidance in locating underground water had the farmers lose precious money. Dhoda Harish Kumar, son of the deceased farmer recalled the circumstances leading to the suicide of his father in order to buttress his point of view that the government needs to check illegal activities hitting agriculture field.

“The soyabean crop failed owing to spurious seed supplied to us,” he stated. The State government is tackling the crisis through long term planning which was disclosed by Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao during his visit to Adilabad district in September last year. “Long-term planning is alright but the government needs to take care of farmers by introducing small term strategies to counter the issues faced by farmers day in and day out,” Mr. Jadhav opined.

“There should be a proper study at grass roots level of all factors contributing to the crisis,” suggests Sher Raju. “The government should keep us abreast of the knowledge on pest control, for starters,” he added.

Farmer ends life

Meanwhile, Gurijala Rajanna, a 55-year-old farmer from Shivguda in Utnoor mandal, committed suicide on Tuesday following failure of crop and mounting debts. He cultivated maize in 12 acres and the crop had failed landing him in indebtedness.

According to the police, Rajanna, consumed pesticide last evening at his residence and succumbed at RIMS hospital this morning

The enthusiasm shown in organising cultural and religious events such as jataras is missing when it comes to providing succour to families of farmers who committed suicide, said Naresh Jadhav, Congress leader
