BAREILLY: Farmers already owning more than 80 bighas of land in Meerganj tehsil and driving SUVs were given allotment of land meant for the poor, under government schemes.

The divisional commissioner was reportedly surprised on receiving the information and has asked for a probe into the matter.

The matter came to light when residents of Asadnagar Sisauna village, under Meerganj tehsil, reported large irregularities in the distribution of patta land to the state PWD minister, Shivpal Singh Yadav.

Accusing local gram pradhans of partisan attitude, the villagers alleged that 11 farmers, who already own landholdings ranging from 20 to 100 bighas, have been given land meant for the poor. "On the other hand, more than a thousand landless farmers, who are the real beneficiaries of the scheme, are being ignored," a villager said.

"The entire purpose of the scheme has been defeated as those owning palatial houses and luxury vehicles get the land, which is meant for the benefit of poor and landless farmers," he added.

Talking to TOI, additional district magistrate (administration), Arun Kumar, who is also heading the enquiry into the matter, said, "The matter is being investigated on directives of the divisional commissioner and those found involved in the matter will not be spared at any cost."

Explaining the allotment of patta land, Kumar said, "Ordinarily, patta land is allotted by the local administration on recommendation of the concerned gram sabha. Widows of defence personnel and soldiers disabled in war are given the top priority. Poor and landless labourers from the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) category come next and are allotted between one to 18 bighas of land for a period of 10 years. Once the lease period expires, the owner is entitled to transfer the rights of the land to another person by either selling or mortgaging it."

Meanwhile, slamming the authorities, BJP MLA, Dr Arun Kumar, said, "There appears to be a deep rooted nexus between some junior level employees and the patta owners who in connivance with the gram sabha office bearers have usurped land meant for the poor. The matter should be thoroughly investigated and those found responsible should face the music."
