Speaking at a seminar organized for honouring farmers here on Saturday, Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar announced that awards should be instituted by all states for honouring innovative work done by farmers in the country.

"Rajasthan has already started honouring farmers for their innovative work. The other states should also follow it. I will write to chief ministers of other states to start honouring farmers and give away awards to them for their innovative works."

Pawar was in Jaipur to take part in the programme organised by the agriculture department and Centre for International Trade in Agriculture and Agro-based Industries (CITA).

He also said that when the prices of petrol, diesel, labour and pesticides are increasing, the farmers should also get increased prices for their crops.

Besides, he also claimed that after Independence in 2010-11, it was a record production of wheat, oilseeds, pulses and cotton in the country. He expected that in 2011-12, the production would go even higher. "This year, the rain is good in most of the parts of the country. So, the production would go even higher this year," he said.

Praising the efforts of the farmers, he said that the farmers have made the country independent in foodgrain production. "The stores and godown of foodgrains are completely filled," he said.

Moreover, addressing the farmers, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said that a policy for agriculture will soon come up. He gave credit to the farmers for their efforts in taking Rajasthan to the first place in the country for record production of pulses. "We are planning to devise an agriculture policy for farmers," Gehlot said.

He also pointed out the shortage of labour in agriculture fields after National Rural Employment Guarantee Act come into force in the state. "NREGA has benefitted underprivileged people in the rural areas. It guarantees work even in draught situation. Earlier, when there were drought-like situation, we used to travel frequently to Delhi for grants of Rs 250 crore. But now due to NREGA, each district is getting Rs 250 crore. So it has made a difference," he said.
