Chandigarh: The ongoing procurement of mustard at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 4,000 per quintal in Haryana is hurtled by a lack in the number of collection centres. Farmers are selling the produce to traders at Rs 3,700-3,800 per quintal in the state as the logistic costs are too high to reach the collection centres in many districts in the state.

Most of the farmers have sold their produce to private traders as 38-odd centres opened for the mustard procurement have failed to cater to farmers across districts.

“I had to sell mustard at Rs 3,600 per quintal as government procurement had not commenced,” a farmer who harvested mustard sown on a 4-acre land in Mahendergarh told ET.

The market price of open market is prevailing below the MSP in most markets in Haryana. “The market price of mustard is below Rs 3,900 in most mandis,” a trader based in the Charki Dadri district said.

The Haryana government had announced that HAFED would procure fair average quality (FAQ) mustard seed at an MSP of Rs 4,000 per quintal, including bonus of Rs 100. Under the scheme, HAFED is buying mustard seed directly from the farmers through the shops of its member Cooperative Marketing Societies. The payment to farmers is to be made electronically through RTGS to their bank accounts, he added.
