A large number of farmers, who had lost their crops, houses and other property in the recent floods in north Karnataka, took out protest rally here on Tuesday to draw the State Government’s attention towards alleged irregularities in disbursing compensation to them and implementing relief works in the affected villages.

The farmers, who were planning to storm the Vidhana Soudha, wanted an assurance from the Government on providing adequate compensation to the affected people and effectively implementing relief works.

The farmers alleged that the B.S. Yeddyurappa Government had failed to respond to the difficulties being faced by the flood-affected farmers.

As a preventive measure, the police arrested Congress leader H.K. Patil, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council V.S. Ugrappa and KPCC president R.V. Deshpande.

They were later released. The police had closed all entrances to the Vidhana Soudha.

Earlier, addressing the farmers at the Freedom Park, Mr. Patil, who headed a KPCC committee on providing compensation to the flood victims, sought a White Paper on the relief works taken up by the Government.

The Government had become bankrupt and the Chief Minister himself had admitted several “mistakes” he had committed, Mr. Deshpande said, and sought Mr. Yeddyurappa’s resignation.

KPCC working president D.K. Shivakumar said that the Congress would continue its fight against the Government till justice was delivered to farmers.

Nearly an hour after the farmers and Congress leaders had dispersed from the scene in front of the Vidhana Soudha, Minister for Public Works C.M. Udasi and Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation Basavaraj Bommai arrived to receive a memorandum.

The Ministers told presspersons that they had directed the officials concerned to receive a petition from the farmers.
