After Mansa, now the farmers in Bathinda and Faridkot districts are up in arms against the state government over the land acquisition issue.

Though their land was acquired by the state government many years back, the state government may face renewed agitation from farmers, who think the land was `misused` and sold off to colonizers. Two agitations have already been witnessed in Bathinda and Faridkot in the last couple of weeks and with Assembly elections around the corner, the government may face more heat in the coming days as farmers have announced to resume their agitation.

"There is no logic in making forcible acquisition of farmers` land at throwaway prices and now selling it at market rates by cutting it into residential plots. We will start protests against the government," said Mukhtiar Singh, a Faridkot-based farmer. In Bathinda, Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) had acquired 185.77 acres of land in March 2007 to develop Urban Estate, Phase IV and V. Later, Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) acquired this land at a rate of Rs 972 per square yard.

Last week, when farmers came to know that BDA was selling plots on this acquired land at a rate of Rs 11,000 per square yard, they resumed their agitation. This agitation led to a clash between farmers and some private contractors aligned with BDA, leaving many injured on August 17 in Bathinda.

In the neighborhood Faridkot district, some days back farmers announced to start an agitation 13 years after their 158 acres of land was acquired by the state government to set up a health university. The state government acquired this land to set up Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in 1998 and the farmers were paid Rs 4.5 lakh per acre as compensation.

But 13 years down the line, the university was not constructed on the acquired land and the land prices were elevated to about Rs 2 crore per acre. Out of the total 158 acres, 72 acres were used to construct a central jail and remaining 86 acres of land was transferred to PUDA.

So a month back when PUDA started the process to construct a residential colony, inviting applications for allotment of 561 plots at a rate of Rs 5,000 per square yard, it left 122 farmers, the original owners of the land, a disappointed lot. "Though the SAD(B) government claims to be the true representative of the peasantry, how serious they are about the well-being of the common man can be judged from these cases," said Jalandhar Singh, another affected farmer.
