Paddy cultivation on over 1.50 lakh acres in three southern districts served by the Periyar river water through Vaigai dam has reached a critical situation with dwindling storage in Periyar and Vaigai reservoirs.

Currently, the over 80-day standing crop in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts is facing a shortage of around 650 mcft of water even after calculating an anticipated fresh flow into the Periyar dam of around 259 mcft.

PWD engineers are cautious over diverting around 950 mcft of water reserved in both the dams meant for Chithirai festival (150 mcft) and drinking water requirements of Andipatti, Sedapatti, Dindigul and Madurai Corporation. Farmers of double crop area should be more worried as they could not raise the first crop at all due to the poor storage in the dams.

Besides the crop in the two paddy areas in the plains, the combined Periyar credit of 3,210 mcft (including 1,997 mcft in Periyar dam) has to be used to raise over 14,000 acres in Cumbum Valley also. Pressure is also from the farmers of Vaigai old ayacut, who have been demanding to release their share of water. Over and above, the engineers have the inherent problem of drawing water from the Periyar dam as the level dips to 108 feet.

M. Meenakshi Sundaram, former chairman, Periyar System Project Committee, claimed that farmers of single crop area required at least four turns of irrigation. “Loss of a turn of irrigation will result in at least 20 per cent loss of yield,” he said.
