Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday said farmer welfare topped the government's list of priorities and that agriculture would undoubtedly be given maximum impetus.

Talking to officials about his government's newest initiatives on the eve of the state-level bankers' committee meeting at his camp office, the CM urged them to ensure that all welfare measures for farmers are implemented in a transparent manner. He made it very clear that farmers' welfare took precedence over everything else.

"We are determined to give top priority to agriculture and horticulture along with allied activities like dairy farming, fisheries etc.

"Despite adverse weather conditions, the state has been making significant contributions to the national food security mission," the chief minister said.

Reddy said efforts to streamline National Rural Employment Guarantee Act ( NREGA)works was underway to see to it that there was no scarcity of farm labour during the agricultural season.

He said that the proposed 0% interest loans, amounting to Rs 30,985 crore during 2011-12 (Rs 20,285 crore during kharif and Rs 10,700 crore during rabi), would benefit 94 lakh farmers who can get loans of up to Rs 1 lakh.

Similarly, 7.44 lakh farmers would benefit from the Rs 432-crore subsidy on farm equipment, he added.

Officials informed that fertilizer consumption in the state had gone from 40 lakh MTs in 2004 to 80 lakh MTs during 2011-12.

During the same period, the subsidy on fertilizers has gone from Rs 1,955 crore to Rs 10,595 crore.
