FDI placards waved in well

Trinamul Congress members today carried placards inside Parliament denouncing the decision to let foreign players enter the multi-brand retail market, snubbing the government’s efforts to get ally Mamata Banerjee’s party on board.

It was the first time since the FDI row erupted last week that party MPs waved placards that read “FDI hai hai” as they stormed the well of the House demanding that the government roll back its decision.

According to rules, MPs are not supposed to carry and display placards inside Parliament.

The number of Trinamul MPs on their feet shouting slogans like “FDI hai hai” was also more compared with the previous days as they appeared to be making a deliberate effort to get heard in the din.

One party member said they were following orders from the top and that MPs had been “asked to go inside Parliament and protest strongly”.

Actor-politician Satabdi Roy, rarely seen speaking in the House, waved a placard along with fellow MPs Somen Mitra, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De, Sucharu Haldar, Ambika Banerjee and Nurul Islam.

Parliamentary party leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay and some other fellow ministers from the party were present, too, but did not step into the well.

The increased aggressiveness of the party, one of the Congress’s key allies in the central coalition, came in the backdrop of desperate efforts of government managers to reach out to Mamata.

But the Trinamul chief, who is against liberalising foreign investment rules in retail, has reportedly not been taking calls from Congress ministers.

With Mamata not responding, Congress managers tried to reach her through Sudip. Sources said after Parliament was adjourned, minister P.K. Bansal spoke to Sudip.

Later, Congress MPs like Sanjay Nirupam and Sandeep Dikshit, junior minister D. Purandeswari and others met Sudip and asked whether his party would join hands with the Left and the BJP to destabilise the government.

“We remain firm on our stand that the government must roll back the decision of FDI in retail,” the Trinamul MP said, asked about his party’s stand. The protest inside the House, he added, showed his party’s resolve.

Asked what Trinamul would do if there was a vote in Parliament, he avoided a direct reply. “We will decide when it comes up,” he said.

Government managers, however, appeared confident that Trinamul wouldn’t join hands with the Left and the BJP to vote against the government and would rather abstain by walking out.

Trinamul sources said their leader wouldn’t go to the extent of destabilising the government.
