Beed: The Maharashtra state government has promised to act against rampant female foeticide in Beed district that was reported by CNN-IBN earlier. The state government will meet Maharshtra Medical Council (MCI), Indian Medical Association (IMA) and radiologists to find a way to curb foeticide.

They will all be looking at a proposal to shut down all stand-alone sonography centres and ban some abortion drugs.

The decision comes after CNN-IBN reported from Beed on the recovery of several foetusus and the death of a pregnant woman. Among the most backward districts, Beed is notorious for sex determination tests.

Maharashtra Health Minister Suresh Shetty who said that while the government is doing all it can to stop the malpractice, even the MCI needs to take responsibility. "Medical Council needs to take more responsibility. Medical council needs to be more proactive in cancelling licenses' and detecting medical practitioners indulging in such acts."

Female foetus, three to six-months-old, were seen scattered in a drain in Beed.

Known as the 'Butcher of Beed', Dr Sadam Munde and his wife - now in the hiding - thrived on illegal abortions for more than two decades, police said.

Last month 28-year-old Vijaymala Patekar, mother to three girls and pregnant with her fourth, haemorrhaged to death on Munde's operating table. She was well into her second trimester.

The doctor duo were arrested, only to be released on bail later. A sting operation carried out by an NGO a couple of years back revealed their modus operandi.

Activists said that women came in large numbers even from neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Saraswati Munde would carry out the sonography and write down the numbers 16 or 19 on the files, 16 denoted one boy and 19 one girl. The ones with 19 inscribed in their files were sent straight to Sadam for the foetus to be aborted.

Locals alleged that the aborted foetuses very often were fed to dogs. More than two dozen abortions were carried out every day in the clinic alone.

The fear now though is that political patronage the Mundes have long enjoyed will ensure they go scott-free again.
