Karunanidhi makes announcement at inauguration of Anna Centenary Library

Five boiled eggs a week will hereafter be given to students covered under the nutritious meal programme, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced on Wednesday.

At present, three eggs are given to the students — on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays — every week. Henceforth, eggs would be given on five working days of schools a week, the Chief Minister said, declaring open the Anna Centenary Library (ACL) at Kotturpuram here.

He pointed out that since July 2007 three eggs were given to the students. Those who did not consume eggs were given bananas.

Conservancy workers, employed by the government, government undertakings and local bodies on the basis of consolidated pay or daily wages, were being given a pay of Rs.1,000-1,500 a month. From now onwards, those who had completed three years of service would be placed in the pay scale of Rs.1,300-3,000 and their initial take-home pay would be Rs.2,320 a month. They would also become entitled to periodical increase in dearness allowance and three per cent increment annually.

The Chief Minister said there was a proposal for reduction of bus fare for those coming from far-off places to the ACL in the buses exclusively operated for the library.

Mr. Karunanidhi, who earlier unveiled the bust of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai at the entrance of the library, commended School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu for the completion of the library project.

Referring to the inauguration of the library on the occasion of the 102nd birth anniversary of Annadurai, the Chief Minister recalled that Anna read books even when he was in hospital for cancer treatment.

Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said that when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was in power, more funds were allocated to libraries. The ACL would have 12 lakh books in three years.

Referring to the present collection at the ACL, Mr. Thennarasu said no other library could have mustered five lakh books on the day of the inauguration. The library complex was a green building.

G. Arivoli, Public Libraries Director, presented the first membership card to the Chief Minister. S. Malathi, Chief Secretary, and Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin were among those present.
