LUCKNOW: The incessant rains in the past two days and the ensuing flash flood forced the Corbett National Park evacuate tourists on Saturday and close down the park for 24 hours. The park was reopened on Sunday afternoon. The park authorities said that the streams that ran down the park's length and breadth were so strong that even the tourist vehicles would have flown away.

"That's why we closed the park and requested tourists to vacate the area," said Corbett National Park director RK Mishra. It was for the first time that a flash flood in winter month forced park authorities to clamp down on the business in the peak tourist season.

The park suffered revenue loss due to this as the tourists were refunded the money. "Security of tourists is our prime concern," said the director. The incessant rains for the past two days had generated several rivulets running down the park area and crossing them would have been dangerous for the tourists. The situation got extremely grim after 12 noon on Saturday and it was then that the park authorities decided to close the park and ask tourists to vacate rest houses in the park area.

The flash floods receded in 10 to 12 hours and the park was reopened on Sunday afternoon when the water ebbed. The authorities said it was the first-time experience when a flash flood in winter months hit the business in the Corbett National Park. Though the director denied that any of the tourists was air-lifted, he said tourists were discouraged to stay back as the park had never faced such a situation before. Corbett Park is closed between June 15 and November 15 which is the monsoon period. The winter months after that get brisk business. Since the flash floods hit the park for the first time in winters, the park authorities were also not prepared to handle it.

Meanwhile, the repair of the roads which have been damaged in the flash flood has started. Corbett has Bhabar formations, which are very prone to erosion as a result of which, whenever there is a heavy rain there are several rivulets that come up, and as they flow down the park they damage the roads. Corbett also has a Kalagarh dam but since it lies south of the park, authorities denied that water from the dam could have resulted into flash flood. "Continuous and the downpour was the only reason," said the official.
