Daily food grains availability per person in India has dropped by nearly 7 grams in the last five years, Parliament was informed on Friday.

Per capita availability of food grains stood at 438.6 grams per day in 2010 compared to 445.3 grams per day for a citizen in 2006, Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

It was 442.8 grams per day in 2007, 436 grams in 2008, and 444 grams in 2009 before plunging to 438 grams per person per day in 2010, the Minister said.

Mr. Rawat said the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) has achieved the targeted additional production of 20 million tonnes within four years of its implementation.

The total food grain production has increased from 217.28 million tonnes in 2006-07 to 241.56 million tonnes in 2010-11.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said earlier that the country has achieved a record food grain production of 241 million tonnes (MT) in 2010-11 but he has been stressing on ushering in a second Green Revolution to meet the mounting future domestic food grain demands.

The estimated 241 million tonnes food grain production is higher by 5 million tonnes as announced by the Agriculture Ministry in its third estimate.
