Food Securities Bill will make wheat available for Rs two per kg, jowar for Rs one per kg and rice for Rs three per kg but this will affect work culture and labourers won’t be available for work, said Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar at the annual general meeting of Vasantdada Patil Sugar Institute and Maharashtra State Sugar Industries Association.

“The government should not decide the sugarcane prices and the job should be left to sugar industries from particular areas. In case the sugar factory fails to pay the promised rates, the managing committee should take the responsibility instead of the government pitching in for the losses,” he said.

“If sugar factories want to face competition, then management should be improved. The managing committee of the sugar factory should decide the rates for sugarcane. Why should it be left to the chief minister when the managing committee is itself an expert on the issue. Next year on, the managing committee should take up this task,” said Pawar.

Speaking at the occasion chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said, “This time, sugarcane won’t go waste. Works in all sugar factories would be over by April 3.”
