NEW DELHI: Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said the country's food grain production is likely to reach an all-time high level this year as bumper crops are expected in wheat, rice and pulses on the back of good monsoon rain last year.

He said wheat production is likely to cross 100 million tonnes for the first time in 2013-14, surpassing the previous record of 94.88 million tonnes achieved in 2011-12 crop year (July-June).

The minister also expressed his confidence that the farm sector will grow 4% this fiscal as against around 2% in the previous year. He was addressing scientists and policy makers here at the 85th Annual General Body Meeting of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Society.

He said, "In the last ten years, our food-grain production increased from 198 million tonnes in 2004-05 to 259 million tonnes by 2011-12, at an average of about 6 million tonnes per annum. The two major staple cereals of the country, wheat and rice, registered an increase of nearly 50 million tonnes during this period".

Pawar also lauded the contribution of agricultural scientists in the success of the recently launched programmes for fast growth in food-grain production.

Highlighting rise in food-grain production achieved by the National Food Security Mission, the minister said, "I feel an important factor contributing to the success of these programmes is the active involvement of scientists and the officials of development agencies, right at the level of farmer's field."

He informed that in 2013, the ICAR released 104 new improved varieties/hybrids of different field and horticultural crops with potential for higher yields.

"These varieties also have enhanced tolerance/resistance to various forms of stress for cultivation in diverse agro-ecological regions of the country", said Pawar.
