Greenpeace India's ongoing campaign, “Fools for forests”, has received a tremendous response from people from diverse professional backgrounds primarily due to wholehearted support from the who's who of Bollywood.

The campaign has attracted more than 30,000 people who have pledged their support to it.

According to Bollywood actor Vinay Pathak who is renowned for his wisecracks, he is extending support to the campaign not to gain mileage but because he feels strongly that our country's forest cover needs to be preserved for future generations. “Greenpeace is the right channel to create awareness about this issue. As an ambassador, I want to ensure that more and more people cutting across religion, caste and gender join this campaign,” said the actor in a telephonic interview. Veteran actor Om Puri says: “The government likes to project those who ask for a different, more sustainable and just model of development that does not destroy nature as fools…It is time to redefine true progress as the ability to keep our remaining forests intact and yet meet the energy needs of all Indians. Today's youth no longer accepts one at the cost of the other. All I am asking is that India's forests not be mined for coal.”

As part of the campaign, Greenpeace has also released a video with all-important messages from 14 celebrities including Vinay Pathak, Mahesh Bhatt, Om Puri, Nandita Das, Shyam Benegal, Salim Khan and Shaan.

The campaign, launched this World Environment Day, seeks to bring together a broad coalition of people to stop destruction of forests for faulty energy choices. The non-government organisation has launched a mass media campaign to create awareness among people about environmental issues. The campaign gains greater relevance against the backdrop of the recent events with the Government proposing to open more forests to coal mining.
