An alleged Maoist activist was on Tuesday rearrested in Nagpur after being acquitted by the court of all charges against him, the counsels for the activist alleged on Wednesday. They alleged that he was being implicated in cases. They also said that they were manhandled by the police when they went to ask details about his arrest.

“Arun Thomas Fereira was arrested in May 2007. Eight cases under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) were foisted on him. He was acquitted in all of them. In 2008, he was implicated in a case where 11 students from Chandrapur were arrested for Maoist links. Though he was in jail at the time, Arun was also added as an accused. On Friday 23rd Sept, he was acquitted in this case as well,” activist Susan Abraham said.

Mr. Fereira's counsels said they had gone along with his brother and mother to Nagpur Central Jail on Tuesday because he was to be released that day. “When he was coming out of the jail, some unidentified persons forcibly pulled him from the jail gate, covered his mouth with hands and held him by his neck, dragged him to a numberless Tata Sumo, forcibly pushed him inside the Sumo and left the jail premises,” a written complaint submitted to the Dhantoli police station (a copy of which is with The Hindu ) stated.

Advocate Surendra Gadling, who had gone there along with others, said they were manhandled by the police officials when they went to ask about the persons who allegedly took away Mr. Fereira. Ms. Abraham said that Mr. Fereira's lawyer was later informed in the evening by the police that they had arrested him for a case registered in 2007.

Mr. Fereira's counsels said they have given a written complaint to Dhantoli police station. “We have also marked a copy to the Nagpur Commissioner of Police; Administrative Judge of Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench; Maharashtra Human Rights Commission chairperson and the Superintendent of Central Prison, Nagpur,” they said.

Nagpur Commissioner of Police Ankush Dhanvijay denied getting any such complaint. “I have not yet received any such complaint. I do not know of it,” he told The Hindu.

Purada police, who arrested him, told The Hindu that he was arrested from Vadsa police station on Tuesday at 5.30 pm. “He has been arrested for a 2007 case of murder. He was produced in the court on Wednesday, and was remanded [to] police custody till September 30. He has been involved in naxal activities,” Purada police told The Hindu.
