After providing the right to education to underprivileged children in the city, it is time for them to avail their right to health.

Delhi has become the first Indian state to bring schoolchildren under such a scheme with the launch of ‘Chacha Nehru Sehat Yojna’ on Saturday.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit launched the ambitious scheme under which nearly 14 lakh school children in the city will be provided free medical treatment and health check-ups by the Delhi Government.

Underprivileged students from Municipal Corporation of Delhi schools, New Delhi Municipal Council schools and private schools will not only be medically examined, but will also be treated and, referred further for examination or surgery (as the case may be) to ensure good health of school-going children who otherwise will not be able to bear the exorbitant medical expenses. The scheme will also cover non-school going children in the subsequent phases.

“The government is running 954 schools which will be covered in one year by nearly 125 teams, each comprising a qualified doctor, nurse and data entry operator.  The Scheme is an example of collaboration between the Health and Education Departments for the benefit of school going children in Delhi,” said Dikshit.

Dikshit announced the scheme while presenting Delhi government's budget for 2011-12 in March and a corpus fund of Rs. 100 crore was set up for its implementation. The plan, launched on the occasion of 94th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, aims to provide free healthcare to children up to the age of 14.

Under the scheme, the government will prepare comprehensive health profile of all the school children and will keep them in an electronic format.
