Under the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana,' any family earning below Rs. 1 lakh per annum can get free medical treatment and care worth Rs. 1.5 lakh a year.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said that no other State had implemented such a scheme on such a wide level. He, along with the Deputy Chief Minister and State Health Minister Suresh Shetty distributed identity cards to needy families from the city at the function.

The scheme was recently launched in Amravati, one of the eight districts selected for the implementation of the first phase of the project.

The first phase is expected to be implemented from March 2012 and will include families from Nanded, Gadchiroli, Solapur, Amravati, Dhule, Raigad, Mumbai city and Mumbai suburban area.

When implemented completely, the scheme is expected to benefit 2 crore 5 lakh families, Mr. Chavan said.

As many as 972 medical procedures and surgeries, including critical ones such as cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery and prostheses are a part of the scheme, so are 121 follow-up procedures.

The scheme will work on the basis of Public Private Partnership (PPP).
