Fresh blows dent iron grip of Bellary’s brothers Reddy-Sreenivas Janyala

The Reddy brothers’ iron grip on Bellary has come undone. Mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy is already in jail. In the most severe blow to the family since his arrest, his younger brother Somasekhara Reddy has now been detained for questioning by Andhra Pradesh’s Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly bribing a CBI judge in Hyderabad to grant bail to Janardhana Reddy.

Friday’s “catch” — it has not yet been declared an arrest — leaves all significant players of the family involved in running businesses and politics in Bellary, as well as their closest aides, either under detention, in jail, or running away from the law.

On Thursday, the Reddys’ close friend and business partner T Suresh Babu, an Independent MLA from Kampli in Karnataka, was arrested by the ACB in the cash-for-bail case. Dashrathram Reddy, father-in-law of Janardhana Reddy’s sister and a financier who helped him in legal matters, has already been arrested in the same case.

And Janardhana Reddy’s brother-in-law B Srinivas Reddy, who used to handle all their iron ore mining operations in Bellary, is in jail in the illegal mining case.

Besides, the eldest of the brothers, Karunakara Reddy, who was indicted by the Karnataka Lokayukta, is expected to be summoned by the ACB in the cash-for-bail case as they believe all brothers together hatched the plan to bribe the CBI judge. The cash-for-bail scanner is also on Janardhana Reddy’s protégé and staunch family supporter B Sriramulu, who floated the BSR Congress.

The family’s strongest supporter outside of Bellary, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy of Andhra Pradesh, is no longer in a position to offer any support. He is in jail in a case involving his own wealth, allegedly acquired illegally.

Officials say the detention of Somasekhara Reddy, a BJP MLA from Bellary (Urban), has put an end to the Reddys’ rule in Bellary. “Eldest brother Karunakara Reddy is sitting tight, expecting to be summoned by the ACB. His movements are under watch,” an ACB official said. “In its complaint to the ACB regarding the bribery of the CBI judge, the CBI stated that several members of the family were involved. The ACB summoned Somasekhara Reddy and Suresh Babu but has not decided yet on calling Karunakara Reddy.”

Used to flexing muscle and money power to have their way, the family is now left fighting legal battles. “The bail bribe case may prove to be the family’s [undoing] but only if the investigation is taken to its logical conclusion and the law takes it course. The nation should also get back the money that the Reddys made by looting its resources,” says Jayprakash Narayan, Lok Satta Party president, who has been criticising the slow process of investigation in the illegal mining case.

Gali Janardhana Reddy was arrested from Bellary by the CBI on September 5 last year and brought to Hyderabad in the Obulapuram Mining Company illegal mining case. The CBI court in Hyderabad remanded him in judicial custody and he was lodged in the Chanchalguda Prision. He appealed five times, unsuccessfully, for bail.

On March 2, he was taken to Bangalore by the CBI in another case involving illegal mining by his other company, Anantapur Mining, and produced before a CBI judge who remanded him in judicial custody in a Bangalore prison, where he is currently lodged.

In the first week of May, Somasekhara allegedly approached first additional special judge of the CBI court T Pattabhirama Rao through friends including a retired district judge, two serving judges, an advocate, and a shady real estate agent with a criminal record. On May 11, judge Rao took up Janardhana Reddy’s sixth bail petition and within 15 minutes granted it.

The order stunned the CBI, which conducted an investigation and found that a deal had been struck by the brothers and their associates with the judge through his son T Ravi Chandra. A raid on bank lockers owned by the judge’s family unearthed Rs 2 crore in cash, a portion of the alleged bribe money. The CBI filed a complaint with the then Andhra Pradesh chief justice Madan Lokur, who immediately suspended the judge. The case was transferred to the ACB which arrested the judge, his son, retired district judge T V Chalapati Rao, district judges K Lakshminarasimha Rao and D Prabhakar Rao, real estate agent P Yadagiri Rao, advocate T Aditya, and Janardhana Reddy’s sister’s father-in-law Dasrathrama.

Based on Dasrathrama’s statement, the ACB issued a summons on July 26 to Somasekhara Reddy and T Suresh Babu; their anticipatory bail petitions were rejected. Suresh Babu surrendered.
