PATNA: The Ganga, on Friday, continued to recede both at the Digha ghat and Gandhi ghat in the state capital. However, at both the places, the river was still above the danger mark. According to the data released by state water resource department, water level of Ganga on Friday morning at Gandhi ghat was 49.44m and 50.36m at Digha ghat.

The receding trend brought relief to a section of people living near the Ganga bank. "Initially, I was shocked to read reports regarding the possibility of cloudburst-like situation. However, with the water level of Ganga falling, we can expect positive changes," said Piyush Kumar, a resident of Kurji.

Meanwhile, several college goers were seen chatting among themselves at Kali ghat on Darbhanga House campus on Friday. Children, escorted by their family members, also visited the place. Some local youth were seen swimming in the river. Many people thronged the Gandhi ghat to see the sharply decreasing water level of the river. Ritesh Kumar, a student residing at Punaichak, said, "I've come to see the water level of Ganga. It is good to see it falling."

The flood-affected people staying at the makeshift relief camp at Collectorate were happy with the relief operations being run by the district administration. Altogether 230 boats have been deployed by the district administration for evacuating the flood-affected people, while 3,119 flood-hit people staying at the relief camps in Athmalgola, Bakhtiyarpur, Barh and Danapur blocks have been provided food items by the district administration. So far, 530 quintals of wheat and rice, 565.25 quintals chura (flattened rice), 33.6 quintals jaggery and 4,831 polythene sheets have been distributed among 1,060 flood-affected families by the district administration.

Meanwhile, chief secretary A K Sinha would review the flood relief operations at 11am on Saturday, said additional collector, disaster management department, SS Mishra. The district disaster management department has been directed by Patna DM N Saravana Kumar to make a list the flood-affected people in the district.
