CHENNAI: To put an end to on-campus discrimination against students from the northeast, the University Grants Commission has asked universities to include the history, cultural heritage and involvement of the region in the freedom movement, in the curriculum of schools and colleges.

The suggestion was first made by the North East Students' Federation to various official bodies in the country, including the human resource development ministry and the NCERT, a couple of months ago.

"We approached various organizations and submitted our memorandum soon after the death of Nido Taniam, 20, of Arunachal Pradesh, who was beaten to death in Delhi," said Taba Toni, general secretary of the federation from Arunachal Pradesh. "This was one of our major demands. It will help people understand more about us."

UGC deputy secretary Shakeel Ahmad has written to vice-chancellors of universities across the country about the recommendations of a task force set up by HRD ministry to promote educational opportunities and the welfare of students from the Northeast, after Taniam's death sparked an outcry from northeastern students.

The task force has recommended the curriculum be changed or modified to include novels or short stories from the region, translated from different languages, at the university level. "The history of NE (pre-colonial up to Independence) should be taught at the elementary and secondary school levels, and graduate and postgraduate levels," the letter said.

Universities have been asked to ensure the syllabus features important personalities from the region who participated in anti-colonial uprisings and the freedom movement.

The UGC has suggested that schools and colleges encourage students to spend some time in the region to understand the culture and appreciate it. The task force has recommended the idea of regular cultural exchanges between institutions in the Northeast and other areas should be built into the higher education system.

Joi Gara from Arunachal Pradesh, who studied engineering at VIT University, said he had not experienced any discrimination but had heard several people from his hometown recount sordid tales of racial abuse. "South India is so much better than the north in this respect. They don't discriminate so much," said Gara, hoping that getting to know more about the Northeast and its people would help others respect them more and accept them.
