Mamata Banerjee today talked of “good” and “bad” Maoists, the differentiation said to be part of a strategy to drive a wedge in the rebel camp.

“Not all Maoists are bad. Some are doing good work. One section, however, does not believe in democracy. They indulge in violence and bloodbath,” she told journalists on the sidelines of the National Development Council meeting at Vigyan Bhavan.

Mamata’s differentiation came on the day her week-long ultimatum to Maoists to lay down arms and come to the talks table expired.

The Bengal chief minister said her effort was to get the rebels to join the mainstream. “We don’t want bloodbath. Violence is not acceptable in a democracy. Maoists should join the mainstream and the government will look into all their grievances and solve them.”

Mamata sought to distance herself from the Maoists and denied she had taken their support to fight the Left. On speculation that she had “ditched” the Maoists, she said: “Who told you? They never supported us. Their members fought the election against us and it was because of their poll boycott call that the CPM won in Jhargram.”

As for her absence from Teen Bigha when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited it, she said: “I was not invited. Nobody asked me to go to Teen Bigha. It was between the governments of two countries.”

She denied allegations that she had snubbed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a second time by refusing to go to Teen Bigha. Earlier, she had called off her Dhaka visit over the Teesta water-sharing deal.

She refused to talk about the deal but said relations with Bangladesh were fine and all issues would be sorted out.
