The state government is game for offering attractive pay package to doctors willing to hit road to villages. The government has rolled out a new scheme wherein doctors willing to serve in rural areas will get Rs 10,000 more. And for those performing and assisting in caesareanoperations, there will be Rs 2,700 over and above all that will come to them. Till now, doctors get Rs 40,000 monthly salary for serving in rural areas.

In Indore division, the health department zeroed in on 47 hospitals in eight districts to provide healthcare facilities for the cases referred to Indore because of non-availability of treatment. Dr Sharad Pandit, Joint Director, health, said, "Under the scheme, we have identified district, civil hospitals and community health care centres where doctors and other medical staff will get handsome pay package. Doctors will be appointed for a year which will be extended after the CMHO review."

The package of Rs 2,700 will be distributed among five healthcare workers, including gynaecologist, paediatrician, anaesthetist, medical officer and staff nurse. Among the hospitals chosen in Indore division are District Hospitals of Alirajpur and Jhabua, Civil Hospital, Sendhwa and Community Healthcare Centres Kukshi and Sardarpur.

Dr Pandit said, "The policy has been made so that patients get treatment in their areas and are not referred to cities. It will attract doctors and patients who will not have to go to cities for surgeries and other medical facilities."

However, doctors feel government should first provide facilities in rural areas so that doctors can work there well. Dr Manoj Gupta, vice-president, JUDA, said, "Doctors are willing to work in rural areas, but there are places where hospitals do not have basic facilities. It discourages them from going to villages."

Doctors willing to serve in rural areas will now get Rs 10,000 more. Till now, doctors get Rs 40,000 monthly salary for serving in rural areas.
