NOIDA: On July 25, three days before IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal was suspended, the mining officer assisting her in the drive against sand mafia was shunted out. The officer, Ashish Kumar, was transferred to Bulandshahr. While the Noida city magistrate has been handed over Nagpal's duties, the Gautam Budh Nagar district, much to the delight of the sand mafia, currently has no mining officer.

According to sources, the sand mafia faced huge losses in the week preceding the transfer and suspension of the two officials. They said that from July 18 to 24, 15 cases of illegal sand mining were registered. More than 40 vehicles, including dumpers, tractor trolleys and machinery engaged in illegal quarrying, were impounded. Some vehicles belonging to a powerful pol8it8ic8ian, who allegedly patronizes ille8gal sand mining, were also seized. Last week, 25 people were arrested after the officials conducted raids.

Data from the mining department records that in the last six months, 66 FIRs were lodged and 104 arrests were made. A total of 81 machines involved in illegal mining, including cars, two-wheelers, earth movers and trucks, were impounded, said sources.

Since April, the UP Police have lodged 17 FIRs over the sand mining menace. In 22 cases, chief judicial magistrates have ordered arrest of illegal sand miners. In the last month alone, the mining department lodged a police complaint against 55 people in Greater Noida. Over the last three months, 297 vehicles and machinery involved in the mining have been impounded. Fines amounting to Rs 82.34 lakh have also been recovered.

Considering the huge losses and penal action taken against the mafia, it is likely that the powerful sand mafia initiated the mining officer's transfer on July 25 and when that failed to deter Nagpal, she was unceremoniously suspended soon after on July 28, said sources.
