GANDHINAGAR: Nitin Patel, state health and family welfare minister said that the state goverment has decided to take a Rs 5 lakh bond from students at government-funded colleges. This is as security to ensure they serve three years in rural areas. Those who do not serve in rural areas after their studies will have to forfeit the amount. Earlier the amount was only Rs 1.5 lakh, so many students preferred to pay the bond rather than serve in villages.

The state goverment has also introduced a Rs 10 lakh-bond for postgraduate medical students of goverment colleges. Earlier, there was no bond compulsion for PG students. Now PG students will also have to serve in the rural areas for three years after completing their studies.

There are around 1,500 undergraduate and around 450 postgraduate medical seats in goverment medical colleges. Maharashtra and several other states have bond systems with values of up to Rs 50 lakh for PG medical students.

The state is facing a severe lack of medical professionals in rural areas. Despite several requests by the state, doctors aren't ready to serve in the rural areas. This comes even after they provide written assurances while taking admission to government-funded colleges.

The government had started taking bonds from medical students as they study at public cost but society doesn't benefit from their education. However, whether the powerful medical students association will accept this will only be known in the next few days.
