The state government on Monday took yet another step forward in ensuring smooth land acquisition for the mega Posco steel plant in Jagatsinghpur, assuring to fulfil certain demands of a pro-industry outfit having considerable clout in the project area.

At a meeting in Cuttack, the revenue divisional commissioner (central range) Pradipta Mohapatra assured representatives of the United Action Committee (UAC) that the government would consider fulfiling their demands.

The UAC has been demanding one job for each project-affected family, hike in price of agricultural and homestead land, increase in compensation for betel vine workers, contract work to the local people during construction phase and compensation to beneficiaries who demolished their betel vines in 2008. "The demands were genuine. We assured to fulfil those," Mohapatra said.

UAC members said talks were "fruitful". "The state government has assured us to fulfil all our demands. We are satisfied with government's assurance and will definitely cooperate in the land acquisition process," said Tamil Pradhan, a UAC member.

UAC president Anadi Rout added the government assured families displaced due to the project will get adequate compensation. "Today's meeting took the Posco project two steps forward," the UAC chief said.

Paradeep legislator Damodar Rout, who was present at the two-hour long meeting, said the UAC demands were genuine and the RDC agreed to seek approval from the appropriate authorities to fulfil those.

After the state government resumed land acquisition for the proposed 12 billion US dollars Posco project on May 18, the UAC in the initial days opposed land acquisition on grounds that its demands were still unfulfilled. Thirty-two members of UAC were also arrested while protesting land acquisition. Subsequently, it relented from its stand following assurance from Jagatsinghpur collector. Following Monday's meeting, UAC members said they would wholeheartedly support land acquisition work.

The government, meanwhile, continued with land acquisition work. "On Monday, we acquired betel vines of 42 farmers covering 4.5 acre and paid Rs 52 lakh to them as compensation," said block development officer, Erasama, Muralidhar Swain. "Many farmers are now ready to hand over their betel vines after UAC announced full cooperation," he added.

However, general secretary, Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, Sisir Mohapatra said improper rehabilitation and resettlement package to villagers cultivating multiple crops would surely lead to loss of livelihood, starvation, morbidity, social and economic degradation. "Members of UAC are agents of the ruling BJD and Posco, hence kowtowing before the authorities. Large numbers of villagers are not with UAC," he added.
