Raipur: To make sure that no kid sleeps without food in drought-hit areas even when their schools take a summer break, Chhattisgarh government has decided to continue the supply of midday meals during summer vacation as well. Around 26 lakh children in 117 tehsil of 25 districts will benefit with the move.

An official circular issued by education secretary Subrat Sahu stated that all students of government schools in all drought tehsil should be served midday meals, even during summer breaks, from May 01 to June 15.

The MDM will be served on all seven days of the week, including Sundays.

"The concerned authorities at tehsil and district level have been asked to ensure that maximum children come to school unlike other days, to have lunch. The menu will be followed as per norms and teachers/village heads have been asked to ensure proper distribution of food to each child," said Sahu.

State government is spending an estimated Rs 68 crore on this initiative. A budget of Rs 38 crore has been sanctioned for primary class children while Rs 29 crore will be spent for meal of upper primary kids.

There are 15,70,000 kids in various government primary schools in state. As many as 10,11,000 students are enrolled in upper primary government schools here in Chhattisgarh.
