NEW DELHI: In its bid to push farming of pulses, the government is likely to increase the minimum support price (MSP) of the key kitchen item substantially. Sources said the MSP would be raised by Rs 200-300 per quintal in the case of gram or chickpea and lentil, which will be reaching the market from next month onwards.

The sources said the assured price to farmers would also be increased substantially in the case of arhar, moong and urad, which is usually announced in June before the fresh produce reaches mandis. A cabinet minister told TOI that the government will continue to push the MSP of pulses keeping in mind the changing food habit of people and also to support farmers to grow more pulses.

In June this year, the government had hiked the MSP of arhar to Rs 4,625 per quintal in comparison to Rs 4,350 during 2014-15 season. The increase was similar in the case of other two kharif pulses - moong and urad.

However, it remains to be seen whether farmers would sell their produce in mandis at MSP considering the fact that the government has already announced to procure at least 30,000 tonnes of pulses from farmers at market price.

Meanwhile, 12 state governments confiscated at least 82,000 tonnes of pulses during their de-hoarding drives, resulting in a marginal fall in arhar and urad dal prices across the country. The states have indicated that the seized stock will be made available in retail markets within a week, which will further help to cool down skyrocketing prices.

Maximum retail price of arhar slipped below Rs 210 per kg and was quoted around Rs 190 on Tuesday. Urad price dropped by up to Rs 8 per kg in both retail and wholesale markets across the country. The maximum decline in retail prices was recorded in Puducherry.
