The state food department will set up rice mills on the public-private partnership (PPP) model at 158 blocks of the state. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has initiated the process to avoid any further problem in rice procurement.

The crop production was high this year, but due to dearth of rice mills the state food department initially faced problem in the procurement process. State food minister Jyotipriya Mullick said: "We have decided to set up four rice mills in each block. We will hold a meeting with industry and commerce minister Partha Chatterjee on this issue tomorrow." There are certain issues like land, funding and infrastructure that need to be discussed with the industry and commerce department for setting up rice mills. The department is also planning to set up godowns in each block.

Mr Mullick has urged Union minister for food and public distribution system KV Thomas to grant fund for setting up godowns in the state to enhance the storage capacity. Mr Mullick said that the Centre had agreed to release Rs 92 crore for 40 godowns. "The state government will also set up some additional godowns in each block," he said.

The state food department will request all district magistrates to provide one acre of land  in each block to set up the godowns, said the minister. Godowns  with a capacity of five lakh metric ton of rice will be built across the state in the PPP mode.

"We want to do away with the nexus between distributors and dealers. We have been receiving complaints that ration items are in short supply even after introduction of the system of distributors sending ration items directly to the dealers’ shops or godowns. Earlier, the dealers used to bring ration items from the distributors and on the way many such items were pilfered," the minister said. "So if we have our own godowns, the nexus between some distributors and dealers could be stopped and pilferage of foodgrains could be stopped," said the minister.
Some industrialists not disclosing land holding: Partha

KOLKATA, 2 MARCH: State commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee today said that a section of the industrialists is not disclosing about their land holding. Despite reporting the matter to the various Chambers of Commerce, the industrialists are yet to disclose the details. "In some cases the industrialists have bought more land than permissible under ceiling using several names. We have told them to seek approval under 14 Y (of the Land Reforms Act)," said the minister, adding, "We would like to know whether they would use the land earmarked industry for the same purpose.” A number of industrialists had bought ceiling excess land without seeking prior approval from the land and land reforms department during the Left regime. The Trinamul government regularised the issue with post-facto approval for 11 companies and 19 more are pending, said Mr Chatterjee, welcoming German automobile major Volkswagen to set up a unit in the state.
