NEW DELHI: In order to give women wider choice, the government has introduced a mix of birth-control measures, including injectable contraceptives and new oral pills, under the national family planning programme, health minister J P Nadda has said.

Age-old condom brand 'Nirodh' has been given a makeover with a new logo and communication strategy, led by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan as brand ambassador, to give a boost to the campaign.

"As part of our continued efforts to offer Indian women a broader basket of choice, a method mix of contraceptives — injectables, Centchroman and POPs (progestin-only pill) — have now been introduced into the public health system under the national family planning programme. The improved access to contraceptives will address all the development dimensions," Nadda said.

Inclusion in the national programme would mean injectable contraceptives and POPs, or "mini pills", would now be available free of cost at all primary and community health centres apart from district hospitals.

Since awareness plays a crucial role in the success of the drive, the ministry is also planning to rope in the private sector to draw linkages with social marketing and franchisee building to reach all parts of the country, especially rural areas. The latest move assumes significance because India has so far had a poor mix of contraceptive methods, despite registering the highest contraceptive prevalence rate for sterilisation at 36.9% as compared to other countries with similar demographics.
