The liquor baron and Rajya Sabha member from the state, Vijay Mallya, on Tuesday came out in support of tribals in Biligiri Ranga Hills who are in danger of being displaced due to the plan to declare the area as a tiger reserve.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International Film Festival of India, in Panaji, he said that the tribals were guarding the tigers from poaching and other dangers. “If they are displaced, there will be no protection for them (tigers),” he said.

Mallya said he had raised the issue in the upper house of the Parliament and will further take up the issue. The MP had initially supported the idea of a sanctuary in Biligiri Ranga Hill. “Frankly, when I did more research, I myself began to think. It is easy to say to protect the tiger and declare as many areas as you can as sanctuaries,” he said.

Mallya said the tribals claim that they “have been co-existing with the tigers for centuries”.

Environmentalists, who stated that relocation was not mandatory if an area is declared as tiger reserve, wondered why Mallya had to talk on wildlife.

Managing trustee of Wildlife First and member of the National Board for Wildlife Praveen Bhargav said that there was no point of eviction and every citizen had the right to make a choice of what he wants and where he wants to stay.

“If people of BR Hills are making voluntary resettlement, then they must be encouraged to do so. No law can evacuate them. Karnataka has moved forward and has taken the lead in giving land to even those who were landless and had no papers to prove they resided inside the forest areas. Bhadra is a fine example and Nagarhole and Kudremukh are proving to be the same. Moreover, The government of India and the National Wildlife Board in March 18, under prime minister and environment minister Jairam Ramesh had decided to invest Rs8,000 crore for voluntary resettlement of villagers from all protected areas,” he said.

A senior forest official pointed out that the tribals were misguided due to which there was a lot of agitation since September, when the preliminary notification was issued to declare the BR Hills wildlife sanctuary as a tiger reserve.

The area is spread across 610 sq km and houses about 35 tigers and over 6000 families. One-fourth of people stay inside the core area across 350 sq km.

According to the government of India, a relocation package of either Rs10 lakh cash or equivalent agricultural land, along with home and facilities should be provided. The same will be the case in BR Hills, said officials.
