Deceased SFI leader Sudipta Gupta's father said chief minister Mamata Banerjee was ‘off her head' after she seconded police claims that the youth died as he hit a lamp post. Sudipta's father Pranab also did not take comfort in Mamata's claims of solidarity with the family.

"The chief minister is off her head. Is this justice?" a beleaguered Gupta asked, moments after Mamata's visit to SSKM hospital on Wednesday morning, where Sudipta succumbed to injuries on Tuesday night.

"Sudipta died after hitting the lamp post. Even a number of Trinamool workers have died after hitting lamp posts when they stuck their heads out from trains," Mamata earlier said. The chief minister also promised support to the Gupta family.

"I am not a beggar. Is the chief minister alluring me with money? I don't need her sympathy or alms," Gupta struck back, with a steely resolve to ensure justice for his dead son.

"Sudipta's fight is my fight now. I would now take up the case and provide justice to his departed soul. I only wish the chief minister would stand by me when I seek justice in court," Gupta said.

As Sudipta embarked on his last journey, with thousands converging on Kolkata's streets on Wednesday to pay their homage to the SFI leader, who died after alleged police torture, his father was inconsolable.

Family members and friends broke down as Sudipta's body was carried right from SSKM hospital to his residence in Netajinagar on the southern fringes of the city and then to the Alimuddin Street headquarters of the CPI(M) on way to the crematorium. South 24-Parganas CPI(M) secretary Sujan Chakraborty was seen beside Gupta for most part of the rally.

"I lost my wife last year. Now I have lost my son too. What am I left with now? I have no strength to bear this any more," Gupta cried, as Sudipta's sister Sumita Sengupta and other relatives lay the wreath with teary eyes.

Sengupta refused to keep her brother's photograph beside her mother's, as she wanted to hold on to the happier memories with her brother. "Time and again, I had asked him not to get into all these activities, but he was so much in love with the party that this was brought on him at the end," Sengupta wailed.

Early on Wednesday morning, Gupta was seen clutching the violin he taught his son to play. Sudipta was known as a good singer and his father plays the violin well. With his son no more, even music may not be able to provide solace to the bereaved father.
