In a bid to implement better the 'Right to free and compulsory Education' Act (Right to Education - RTE) in the state, the education department is thinking up new ideas.

The primary education department is mulling providing bicycles to those students who have to travel more than 3 kilometres to get to their schools. This provision of bicycles, however, is subject to the finance department's approval.

Sources in the state education department indicated that there is serious consideration to include transportation facility and make bicycles available to the students, in the budget of 2012-13.

"As part of effective implementation of RTE, we are considering provision of transport to students who would need to travel more than one kilometre. It is likely to be a public transportation facility.

Also, for students aged 12-14 years, who travel more than three kilometres to reach their schools, we are considering providing bicycles. We are preparing a plan to manage the finances for bicycles by including the proposal in the next budget," said an official.

As reported earlier in DNA, the state government is planning to merge some of the schools for effective utilisation of resources like school buildings, other infrastructure and teachers for improving the student-teacher ratio.

"Presently there are no plans to close down the schools. Lower primary students of up to standard 5, who travel more than one km, and upper primary students travelling more than three kms to schools in the rural areas, would be entitled to for transportation facility.

The younger children studying in the lower primary would be given a bus or similar transportation and older students, who can ride would be given bicycles for their commute to the school," added the official.
