At a time when there are reports of gross irregularities committed in the implementation of schemes under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the state, a success of the scheme has drawn the attention of many.

With the district experiencing scanty rainfall for the last three years, farmers at Hanhat panchayat of Kairo block were hardly getting any paddy to fulfil their annual requirement. But a MGNREGA scheme finally helped these farmers maintain a paddy stock, which will now fulfil their annual requirement of foodgrain.

There are several farmers who have also saved some money which they have kept either in banks for future use or are using it as capital to invest in installing pump-sets or other means of cultivation to produce crops in the current season.

Under MGNREGA, renovation of a six-km long canal was done to take water to the farm fields in at least three villages Hanhat, Lalmatiya and Torang. This benefited over 5,000 farmers, who sowed various crops mainly paddy, utilizing the canal water for over six months.

The canal is connected to Bucha Opa Dam, constructed at Lohardaga-Ranchi border under Chanho and Kuru blocks in 1967. The scheme worth Rs 15 lakh not only provided work to at least 500 villagers in 10,000 man days but also helped storing paddy for at least one year.

It was farmer Jeevan Oraon who had drawn the attention of the block administration for renovating the canal. Farmers of Hanhat panchayat are now happy and content. "If monsoon is favourable this year, the dam will be able to maintain its water flow for at least nine months," said MGNREGA district nodal officer Chandrabhushan Prasad.

Oraon was also invited to a national workshop of MGNREGA in Delhi for his initiative. He said he had sown 15 kg paddy and the canal helped him to get a produce of 20 quintals. "I have a small family with my wife and a one-year-old daughter. I have stored paddy for the whole year and also earned Rs 15,000 by selling the rest. I have deposited this money in the bank for my daughter's marriage," said Oraon.

Bhola Mahli also cultivated paddy in 55 decimals of land which helped him store paddy for about nine months. "In the last two years, I had to buy rice in the third or fourth month after the paddy crop was harvested. But this year, I got a good crop due to the canal water and saved paddy for at least nine months," he said.

Somra Oraon, Bando Oraon, Etva Oraon, Parna Oraon and several others said they got

double benefits of the MGNREGA scheme which not only provided them work but also helped them get good paddy yield last year when the rains did not favour.
