Haryana's first gram nayalaya (rural court) became functional at Rania village in Sirsa on Saturday.

Punjab and Haryana high court judge, justice SK Mittal, who is also executive chairman of Haryana State Legal Services Authority, inaugurated the court at block level, an official release said.

The court is likely to benefit residents of 54 adjoining villages by providing them justice promptly and economically, the release said adding that the gram nayalya would function twice a week.

Justice Mittal, who also laid the foundation stone of an alternate dispute redressal centre in Sirsa, in his inaugural address stressed the need for ensuring timely justice. He added that if facilities such as alternative dispute redressal centres and facilities being provided by legal services authority were popularised, it would ensure delivery of justice in less time.

He said the cases in gram nayalayas would be disposed off within six months and gram nayalayas would have the facility of a panel advocate.
