The 73-year-old social activist Anna Hazare has decided to go on a “fast unto death” from tomorrow at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to fight corruption, fuelling concern in the Manmohan Singh government at a time the cricket team’s World Cup victory has lifted spirits.

The government is worried because it feels that dissuading Hazare this time will be difficult as he had put off his fast on March 5 on the Prime Minister’s personal request. He is now publicly questioning Manmohan’s ability to fight corruption. Hazare enjoys the support of Swami Agnivesh and Kiran Bedi in his campaign. Others like Baba Ramdev had joined him last time.

Sources in the government feel that Hazare had been hijacked by “hawks and hotheads” who are nursing a political agenda against the Congress.

A statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office late tonight expressed “deep disappointment” at Hazare’s decision to go ahead with the hunger strike.

The statement said that “the Prime Minister has enormous respect for Hazare and his mission”, but there is a feeling in the government that nobody should try to dictate the nature of legislation. Hazare wants the government to accept the draft prepared by a civil society group for the Lokpal Bill which would look into corruption charges against ministers, including the Prime Minister.

The government is ready to enact the Lokpal legislation and include the Prime Minister in its ambit. But the government has its own draft, which the civil society group finds inadequate.

Government sources said such rigidity was not acceptable in a democracy.

The PMO statement said: “Hazare and his colleagues had met the Prime Minister, the law minister and other senior officials on March 7. During the discussion that lasted more than one hour, the Prime Minister had told the group that he appreciated and shared his concern on corruption. Hazare and his group had presented the Prime Minister a draft of their proposal on a Lokpal. The Prime Minister offered and the group accepted a suggestion that a sub-committee of the group of ministers could interact and discuss the draft with the civil society activists.”

The sub-committee, headed by defence minister A.K. Antony, met Hazare’s colleagues but the interaction proved fruitless as the activists insisted that the government accept their draft in full.

Hazare revealed at a media conference that he had told the Prime Minister that the group of ministers was a “big joke”. He also asked Manmohan if his colleagues shared his values.

“There is Sharad Pawar on the GoM, who is known for land scams of crores of rupees, while other members are Veerappa Moily, who is known for the infamous Moily tapes during his tenure as the Karnataka chief minister, and Kapil Sibal who unashamedly certified former telecom minister A. Raja for no scam in 2G spectrum allocation,” Hazare said, asking how they could fight corruption.

Hazare, flanked by Bedi and Agnivesh, said he had told the Prime Minister that the law for controlling corruption should be formulated in consultation with prominent social activists to end corruption in public life.
