JORHAT: Heavy and incessant rainfall in hills of Arunachal Pradesh has triggered the second wave of flood in Assam.

More than 25 villages in Dhemaji district bordering Arunachal Pradesh have been hit by flood till Wednesday. No casualty has been reported yet.

The villages have been affected by the rising waters of the Jiadhol and Gai rivers since Tuesday night. The water level of both the rivers swelled and submerged villages one after another. The rivers are in spate and the numbers of affected villages are likely to go up in the next 12 hours.

The floods also affected vast areas of farmland in the northern district over the past few hours. According to official records, about 195 hectares of cropland in the district are inundated since Tuesday night.

"Flood waters of Jiadhol and Gai rivers submerged about 195 hectares of land in Dhemaji and Sisiborgaon revenue circle in the district till this afternoon. The wave affected several villages in Jonai sub-division too. More reports are awaited," said additional deputy commissioner (Dhemaji) U K Boruah.

He added, "No relief camps have been set up so far. However, the district administration is ready to distribute relief materials among the flood victims. We have sent officials of the circle offices concerned to the affected areas to take stock of the situation and necessary steps will be taken we receive their reports."
