Mumbai: The Maharashtra government today announced that enhanced compensation for land acquired from locals for the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Park project would be disbursed by October 15.

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan made the announcement after talks with the Janhit Sewa Samiti at Sahyadri guest house in Malabar Hill this evening. What the compensation has been hiked to from Rs 22.5 lakh per hectare in February was not clear.

The Janhit Sewa Samiti was in the forefront of an agitation by local farmers, fishermen and political activists opposing the project on the ground that it would affect the livelihoods of the local people.

However, some key members of the samiti led by Praveen Gawankar, who was the leading face of the protests, changed their stance, and agreed to allow the project if enhanced compensation was given.

Industry minister Narayan Rane had held the first meeting with samiti members led by Gawankar in Ratnagiri on August 30. The second round of talks was held today.

Chavan said: "Out of 2,236 project-affected people, 312 have already been paid a total compensation of Rs 50 crore, and the enhanced compensation offered to them would be disbursed by October 15."
