The Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS) has welcomed the government decision to raise the minimum support price (MSP) for pulses for the kharif season. The increase, which ranges from Rs 380 per quintal to Rs 700 per quintal, is part of the government’s strategy to boost production of pulses in the country.

The hike in MSP for pulses this year is significant, both in terms of absolute increase and percentage rise. For tur, the rise is Rs 700 per quintal, from Rs 2,300/q last year to Rs 3,000/q, which represents a 30.43% rise over the previous year’s MSP. This rise is higher than the rise of Rs 500 recommended by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).

VJAS president Kishore Tiwari said it was a long pending demand of dryland farmers of west Vidarbha, who cultivate single cash crop of BT cotton, which is very rain sensitive. Also, the commodity prices are highly volatile in the international market due to US subsidies. The cash crop has also led to complex problems of water crisis in drought-prone Vidarbha, where 98% farmers cultivate dryland.

“We welcome the government initiative to introduce major schemes like the National Food Security Mission (NFSM), the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY), the agriculture macro-management scheme and now incentives to encourage farmers to grow pulses.”

“The Centre is spending Rs 837.03 crore on pulses development this year. The allocation has risen eightfold in four years, from Rs 105.59 crore in 2007-08. Now the government should follow it up with measures to check rain-sensitive cash crops like cotton, sugarcane and soybean by providing direct cash subsidy to those growing pluses to address the agrarian crisis in Vidarbha,” said Tiwari.
