Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Friday announced that the state government would allow 2.5 floor space index (FSI) for the housing schemes in the city for the urban poor. The schemes would be planned by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

“There had been a demand for additional FSI for housing schemes of MHADA in Pune so that more houses could be made available to the poor. The houses will be small so that the poor can afford it,” Chavan said after handing over keys of the tenements at Rajiv Gandhi Housing Complex to slum dwellers who lost their houses in a fire in 2005 at Kashiwadi in Bhavani Peth. The scheme is the first one to be developed under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority scheme in the city. Also present at the function was actor Vivek Oberoi.

He said the decision to grant 2.5 FSI has been taken for housing schemes of MHADA in the city and soon a notification would be issued. “The property rates are at a peak in the city and houses are not available in the city below Rs 40 lakh. The poor cannot afford houses available in open market and government needs to build smaller affordable houses for them,” said Chavan.

The Centre plans to construct low-cost houses so that the city is free of slums, he said, adding that the state government would push forward the idea. The state government has recognised huts that have come up by 1995 for rehabilitation and is trying to extend it till 2000 so that many slumdwellers can be accomodated in the scheme, he said. He also said people should use water carefully and the local civic body should ensure use of recycle water to avoid wastage.

Chavan also said the union government has kickstarted the Unique Identification project in the state that would benefit the poor. The state government would make necessary changes in its various schemes so that those with UID would benefit, he said.
