Introduction It is a triple honour to be asked to deliver the S. Guhan Memorial Lecture. It is a triple honour because the lecture is being delivered in the city where I grew up. It has been organized by the Consumer Action Group, a group whose work I have known and come to admire over the past two decades. And most important, the lecture is held in the name of an intellectual, academic, public servant, and international civil servant – really a multi-faceted personality whose work as an academic I respect in the 1990s.
