More than 200 agro-meteorologists from various parts of the country attending an IMD review meeting at Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) maintained that accurate weather and climate information passed on by the Met department had helped farmers in a big way.

Addressing the 8th annual review meeting of India Meteorological Department, BAU vice chancellor George John said weather forecast-based agro-advisory services of IMD and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) had made significant contributions to minimising crop loss due to adverse weather conditions, even while maximising agricultural output under favourable weather conditions.

"Sometimes these services are under evaluated. We can just imagine the extent of damage to agriculture and human and animal wealth if such services were not available," the VC said and asked agro-meteorologists to make such services available to all stakeholders at the shortest possible time.

V.U.M. Rao, project coordinator, all India coordinated research project on agro-meteorology, Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad, pointed out that although the shortfall in rainfall this year was 12 per cent with 50 to 60 per cent deficiency in agriculture-rich states of Punjab and Haryana, the yield was expected to be normal or near normal.

The credit, he said, would go to weather forecasts and agro-advisories.

S.C. Bhan, scientist, IMD, Pune, stressed that IMD was devising strategies for providing advisories to line departments and its managers at least 15 days in advance to ensure availability of required seeds and fertilisers to farmers.

"Our services are aimed at meeting the challenges of food security, water security, climate change and variability in the country. We are also sharing our expertise with SAARC countries," N. Chattopadhyay, deputy director general (Agrimet), IMD said.

Shilpa Mehta, consultant, New Delhi, presented details of mKisan, a portal that provides information on availability of seeds, fertilisers, their prices, local dealers and other services to registered farmers through sms.

Mehta pointed out that the farmers' portal provided a one-stop shop for meeting all information on agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries.
