Cyclone Hudhud, which made landfall in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam around 11.30am on Sunday and unleashed massive rain and gale that left behind a trail of destruction, might prove beneficial for Jharkhand's rabi crops.

According to Met officials, the cyclone, which crossed Andhra coast with wind speed of 195-200kmph this afternoon, is likely to trigger heavy rain in some parts of Jharkhand on Monday and Tuesday.

Even though farmers are bracing for heavy losses in view of the untimely rain that may damage kharif crops, agriculture scientists suggest the rainwater could boost rabi yields.

Experts said that with some precautions, farmers could minimise the damage to the matured rice crop and use the rainwater as pre-irrigation resource for rabi crops, including oilseeds and pulses.

In-charge of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Simdega, Ashok Kumar said farmers could effectively use the moisture that this untimely rain would bring to fields for rabi crops.

Rabi crops account for around 10 per cent of total foodgrain produced in Jharkhand.

"The effect of the cyclone is likely to die down from Wednesday (October 15). Sowing can be carried out immediately once the rain stops," he told The Telegraph.

In areas where adequate irrigation facilities are available, farmers can start cultivating vegetables such cabbage, potato, cauliflower, chilly, coriander, radish, carrot, green pea, among others.

"But, for wheat, farmers will have to wait till November," he pointed out.

Dhanbad district agriculture officer Dinesh Kumar Manjhi said an alert had been sounded in anticipation of heavy rain and strong winds that were likely to lash the state as Hudhud moved towards north-westwards after the landfall.

"The effect of the approaching cycle was felt yesterday as well as the wind pattern over Jharkhand started changing. Light rainfall was reported from different parts of the state. We have asked farmers not to take up sowing during the rain over the next few days. Also, we advised farmers in low-lying areas to make proper arrangement to drain out excess rainwater from fields," said Manjhi.

To minimise the possibility of damage to ripe kharif crops, the agriculture department has advised farmers not to resort to harvesting right now.

"Those who have already cut their matured crops should keep them in the fields and cover them with plastic or tarpaulin sheets," said Kumar.

The department has also asked farmers to stock up food for cattle and avoid spraying insecticides now as it might get washed away in rain.
