Even as Indians across the nation and the world are drumming up support for Anna Hazare's hunger strike against corruption, a small farmer of Pahanga gram panchayat under Niali block has resorted to the same path to get justice. The 56-year-old farmer, Bhramara Ojha, sat on hunger strike outside the collector's office on Friday demanding payment of his due wages for work he did under the NREGA scheme.

The farmer alleged that he had dug a farm pond in the village under the NREGA scheme in 2010 and was entitled to get Rs 50,000 for the work. But even it's been a year since the project was completed, the officers are not paying him the money.

Ojha said he had engaged 216 labourers for the digging of the pond. The labourers worked for 12 days and finished the work on June 26, 2010. After completion of the project, a team of government officials had also inspected it. Even though all the post-project formalities have been taken care of, the officials are not releasing his wages, alleged Ojha.

For the past nine months, Ojha has been running from pillar to post for his payment, but it has been in vain. So, he has finally resorted to the path of hunger strike to get justice. "My life has become hell since the project was completed. Almost every alternate day, I visit the block development officer's (BDO) office to find out when will I get my pending wages, but no one is able to give me a concrete answer. I have submitted a memorandum to the collector, the panchayati raj minister and even the chief minister. But all my efforts have been in vain, due to which I was forced to sit on a hunger strike to make the concerned officials hear my demand loud and clear," said Bhramara.

He said the labourers who had been engaged in the construction work of the pond are visiting his house daily and demanding their pending wages. "But we have no other option but to send them away. We all are poor people and we really need the money. The officials are unnecessarily harassing us by not paying our pending wages," said Bhramara's son Raghunath Ojha.

Later in the evening, the additional district magistrate (ADM) and the BDO held discussions with the father-son duo and assured them they would look into the matter. After this, the hunger strike was called off.

"I have been posted here recently and have no idea about the problem at all. But I have assured him I will look into his problem and take measures to resolve it at the earliest. After getting my assurance, he has called off the hunger strike," said Kailash Baral, BDO of Niali.
