Current estimates of foodgrain to various welfare programmes reveal serious under-nutrition and wide gaps in safety nets for poor.</em></p><p style="text-align:justify"><em>Mumbai: </em>Jolted by the overnight choking of all sources of income for her household with the imposition of a nationwide lockdown on 23 March 2020, Protima Maity, 34, attempted to obtain her quota of subsidised rice and wheat under Indian law and government programmes and promises.</p><p style="text-align:justify">Like 810 million Indians entitled to subsidised food on account of being below the official poverty line, Maity could take recourse to the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, and buy her foodgrain&mdash;theoretically&mdash;anywhere in India through the One Nation One Ration Card programme, which allows access to the Public Distribution System outside home states.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:justify">Driven by frequent flooding of their 1-acre farmland in West Bengal&rsquo;s Hooghly district, the Maitys came to Udaipur, in the northern state of Rajasthan, around 2016. But the reality is worse because it reflects India&rsquo;s own pre-Covid data. Current estimates of foodgrain to various welfare programmes reveal serious under-nutrition and wide gaps in safety nets for poor.</em></p><p style="text-align:justify"><em>Mumbai: </em>Jolted by the overnight choking of all sources of income for her household with the imposition of a nationwide lockdown on 23 March 2020, Protima Maity, 34, attempted to obtain her quota of subsidised rice and wheat under Indian law and government programmes and promises.</p><p style="text-align:justify">Like 810 million Indians entitled to subsidised food on account of being below the official poverty line, Maity could take recourse to the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, and buy her foodgrain&mdash;theoretically&mdash;anywhere in India through the One Nation One Ration Card programme, which allows access to the Public Distribution System outside home states.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:justify">Driven by frequent flooding of their 1-acre farmland in West Bengal&rsquo;s Hooghly district, the Maitys came to Udaipur, in the northern state of Rajasthan, around 2016. Current estimates of foodgrain to various welfare programmes reveal serious under-nutrition and wide gaps in safety nets for poor.</em></p><p style="text-align:justify"><em>Mumbai: </em>Jolted by the overnight choking of all sources of income for her household with the imposition of a nationwide lockdown on 23 March 2020, Protima Maity, 34, attempted to obtain her quota of subsidised rice and wheat under Indian law and government programmes and promises.</p><p style="text-align:justify">Like 810 million Indians entitled to subsidised food on account of being below the official poverty line, Maity could take recourse to the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, and buy her foodgrain&mdash;theoretically&mdash;anywhere in India through the One Nation One Ration Card programme, which allows access to the Public Distribution System outside home states.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:justify">Driven by frequent flooding of their 1-acre farmland in West Bengal&rsquo;s Hooghly district, the Maitys came to Udaipur, in the northern state of Rajasthan, around 2016. Hungry Nation: Govt Outrage About Global Ranking Cannot Hide Distress In Indian Homes -Kavitha Iyer

-Article-14.com The government has rubbished the 2021 Global Hunger Index report saying it does not reflect reality. But the reality is worse because it reflects India’s own pre-Covid data. Current estimates of foodgrain to various welfare programmes reveal serious under-nutrition and wide gaps in safety nets for poor. Mumbai: Jolted by the overnight choking of all sources of income for her household with the imposition of a nationwide lockdown on 23 March 2020, Protima Maity, 34, attempted to obtain her quota of subsidised rice and wheat under Indian law and government programmes and promises. Like 810 million Indians entitled to subsidised food on account of being below the official poverty line, Maity could take recourse to the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, and buy her foodgrain—theoretically—anywhere in India through the One Nation One Ration Card programme, which allows access to the Public Distribution System outside home states.  Driven by frequent flooding of their 1-acre farmland in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, the Maitys came to Udaipur, in the northern state of Rajasthan, around 2016. She was refused by the owner of the fair-price store, as shops selling subsidised food grain are called.  “The shop owner says I won’t get it because I am a Bengali,” Maity told Article 14, recounting an experience shared by dozens of women in Udaipur’s Malda Street, a hub of Bengali migrants in the desert state.  Until work resumed slowly around July-August 2020, her family including two children survived on food packets distributed by charitable organisations even though the Maitys are registered as NFSA beneficiaries in their native village.
