Srilakshmi, the first woman IAS officer held on graft charges, wanted to continue as the CBI’s guest at a heritage mansion but was packed off to prison.

The 52-year-old, whose three-day CBI remand had ended today, pleaded with the court to let her stay on at the CBI camp office in the palatial, Nizam-era Dilkhusha guesthouse. The court refused and the 1988 IAS topper was almost in tears as she arrived in Chanchalaguda jail on judicial remand till December 12.

The government today suspended her as commissioner of health and family welfare.

Dilkhusha once hosted MPs and other VIPs who came to Hyderabad as guests of Raj Bhavan. The CBI now uses it for interrogation.

Srilakshmi was put up in an anteroom in one of the suites after she requested not to be sent to a police station lock-up. She was allowed food from her home — a 12-room bungalow with a garden and a tennis court — a courtesy extended because she is an IAS officer and the wife of an IPS officer, sources said.

In the court, her counsel today appealed for bail on humanitarian grounds, saying Srilakshmi was a heart patient. She had indeed complained of discomfort during a medical check-up at the CBI office this morning.

The CBI, however, contested the veracity of the medical certificates she had submitted and said the morning check-up by government doctors had found no ailments.

A shell-shocked Srilakshmi, who has had a glittering career so far, was driven to the prison, also home to former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, arrested in the same case.

Srilakshmi is accused of abusing her official position to favour Reddy’s Obulapuram Mining Company when she was industries and commerce secretary.

At the jail, the presence of her husband Gopikrishna did not seem to ease her distress. She tried to call some of her former political patrons but they were not available.

Actor Chiranjeevi was busy with the engagement ceremony of son Ram Charan while K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, who was adviser to former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, was out of the country.
