COIMBATORE: The father of the Green Revolution, M S Swaminathan, on Wednesday said that it was important to focus on better yield with limited per capita land and water resources in the future.

The veteran was interacting with students of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University of which he is an alumni. Swaminathan was on his way to Kerala for treatment, when he visited the university to deliver a lecture on Wednesday evening.

"There is always a shortage of resources. In this situation, we need to improve yield per acre of land," he said. The scientist said that students and scientists should focus on developing techniques that would improve yield using minimum land and water.

Mentioning the food security bill that was passed in August 2013 by the Congress led UPA government, Swaminathan said, "The government has now made it a priority to ensure food security. However, In India, we have a large section of women and children who are malnourished," he added. Stating millets and other crop varieties as examples, he emphasized the need for developing nutritious varieties of food grains.

Climatic change was another important challenge which Swaminathan spoke about. "Crops will have to be designed according to the changing climatic conditions. Temperature, precipitation, frost, sea level and other related factors will come into play in the coming years," he said. Crop varieties that can sustain the changes and simultaneously produce good yield will be one of the targets for scientists in the near future, he said.
