Adolescent girls from 22 districts of the state will now get Centre’s support to continue education and receive complete nutrition. The Centre has chosen 22 districts from Uttar Pradesh to implement the Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent girls (RGSEAG-Sabla).

To be formally launched across 200 districts in the country from mid-November, the scheme aims to empower out-of-school girls ¿ by educating them and providing them with nutritional support.

The Department of Women and Child Development will be the nodal department for the scheme in the state. All details have been received and work will start soon.

The Principal secretary (Women and child development), Balvinder Kumar, said: “We will start work in the pilot phase soon after the panchayat elections are over. We will be conducting a baseline survey to identify beneficiaries and then will have schemes according to requirements.” Under the scheme, projects will be undertaken for providing education to out-of-school girls — this will include who had been married early and had to drop out. The scheme will also focus on providing them with nutrition supplements and free foodgrain. The department will also provide vocational training to help these girls be financially empowered. The target age group is between 11 and 18 years.

The districts have been chosen according to female literacy rate and the percentage of girls married before the legal age of 18. The districts have been categorised as bad, average and good according to percentage levels. In the first phase, each district will be given Rs 30 lakh for identifying the target group. The chosen districts include Shravasti, Bahraich, Maharajganj, Lalitpur, Agra, Sonbhadra, Sitapur, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Deoria, Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar, Mahoba, Pilibhit, Rae Bareli, Banda, Farukkhabad, Bulandshahr, Saharanpur, Jalaun, Bijnore, Lucknow and Chitrakoot.
